Brazil’s Supreme Court: Military trial for coup plot set for April 8

Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin has set April 8 for the start of the trial on the Attorney General’s Office’s complaint against nucleus 3 of the coup plot during President Jair Bolsonaro’s istration. An additional session is scheduled for April 9 to review the case.

The dates were set after Justice Alexandre de Moraes, the case’s rapporteur, authorized it for trial.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the indicted of this group are accused of planning “tactical actions” to execute the coup plot. The group consists of 11 Army soldiers and a Federal Police officer.

This group includes the following individuals:

Bernardo Romão Correa Netto (colonel);

Cleverson Ney Magalhães (lieutenant colonel);

Estevam Theophilo (general);

Fabrício Moreira de Bastos (colonel);

Hélio Ferreira (lieutenant colonel);

Márcio Nunes De Resende Júnior (colonel);

Nilton Diniz Rodrigues (general);

Rafael Martins De Oliveira (lieutenant colonel);

Rodrigo Bezerra De Azevedo (lieutenant colonel);

Ronald Ferreira De Araújo Júnior (lieutenant colonel);

Sérgio Ricardo Cavaliere De Medeiros (lieutenant colonel); and

Wladimir Matos Soares (federal police officer).

Trial

The case will be judged by the Supreme Court’s First , which includes the rapporteur, Justice Alexandre de Moraes, along with Justices Flávio Dino, Cristiano Zanin, Cármen Lúcia, and Luiz Fux.

According to the Court’s rules of procedure, its two s are responsible for hearing criminal cases. Since the rapporteur is a member of the First , the indictment will be heard by that collegiate body.

On March 25, the collegiate body will rule on the complaint against nucleus 1, which includes former president Jair Bolsonaro and other defendants.
